Owlbear’s Rest was conceived during a lighthearted “what-if” conversation on a long drive. Patty was working on figuring out what life post-cancer should look like. After such a life-altering experience, it felt more important than ever to embrace dramatic change and to pursue a fulfilling work-life balance. For Patty, the things that spark joy are coffee, playing games, and building community. And so…Owlbear’s Rest was born.
Embarking on this venture as a second career has been both challenging and exhilarating. Much like raising a child, the depth of commitment required is hard to fully grasp until you’re in the midst of it. Fortunately, Maine is a state rich with individuals dedicated to creating community and helping others achieve their dreams, making this journey a wild and rewarding adventure.

What is Owlbear's Rest?
OBR is a gathering space with the added benefits of great food and drinks, an extensive board game and roleplaying game library, a small retail shop, and an evergrowing community of amazing people.
Are there specific rules or etiquette for playing games at Owlbear’s Rest?
Yes! Be kind to fellow players, handle games gently, and share the fun. Owlbear’s Rest is a safe space where all abilities, ethnicities, neurotypes, genders, and expressions are welcome. If you’re ever unsure about anything, just ask our staff—we’re happy to help.
Is Owlbear's Rest kid-friendly?
While our space is designed as an escape from adulting, kiddos are welcome with their families—especially during our Family Adventures Time. These are designed for all ages to enjoy together. Outside of scheduled events, we ask families to help maintain the relaxed, adult-focused atmosphere.
How do you handle guests staying for hours at a table? Is there a gaming fee?
We love that guests immerse themselves in games for hours and we do not charge a fee or watch the clock. If you enjoy our space, the best way to support us is to treat yourself to a meal, some drinks, or do a bit of shopping in our retail area.
Where exactly is Owlbear’s Rest in Westbrook and how do I get inside?
We are at the center of the Stockhouse Station at 506 Main St in Westbrook, in the same building as the Stockhouse Restaurant. Come on in the front or back door and look for our hanging tavern sign halfway down the hall! The front door locks automatically at 5pm every day, but the back parking lot door is always open when we are.
Do you have parking or public transportation access?
Yes! Free parking is available behind Stackhouse Station, and the Greater Portland Metro Bus #4 stops just steps away.
Is Owlbear’s Rest accessible?

Yes! We offer a variety of gluten-free and vegan-friendly food and drink options. While we’re not a dedicated allergen-free kitchen, we do our best to accommodate a range of dietary needs. If you have specific allergies or concerns, feel free to reach out before your visit—or just ask a staff member when you arrive. We’re happy to help!
Do you sell gift cards?
Yes! Physical cards are available in-store, and e-gift cards can be purchased online.
Do you have a private room?
The Druid’s Grove is a cozy private room perfect for up to 14 guests. It’s ideal for larger gaming groups, games that are complete table hogs (I’m looking at you, Warhammer), and guests who need that extra cocoon of quiet.
The Grove features an extra-large table, side tables, a TV with HDMI cable, and a dedicated heat pump so you can control the temperature in the room.
Beginning September 2026, the Druid’s Grove is available for a flat $30/hour room fee for private use, in addition to any food, drink, retail, or other add-on purchases. There’s no minimum spend, so whether you’re settling in for a quick game or embarking on an all-day adventure, you can enjoy the space without worrying about hitting a spending threshold.
Reservations are highly recommended.

Do you host private games, team-building events, or parties?
Absolutely. Our private room is perfect for birthdays, office events, and epic game nights. Full-venue rentals are also available when your adventuring party requires more room to roam. Aren't restaurants too loud for games?
We’ve built our space with gamers in mind— sound-dampening materials and a thoughtful layout make it easier to focus on the voices at your table. We’re committed to improving our acoustics further and feedback is welcome.
Can I bring outside food or drinks?
We’ve got plenty of delicious options and food and drink sails are our primary income, so we don’t allow outside food or beverages.
I want to find people to play games with– can you help with that?
Yup! We have a few different ways to help connect you with other people.
- Discord: Join our online server to chat, plan meetups, and connect with the Owlbear community.
- Quest Board: Our in-storebulletin lets you post cards for games you want to learn, teach, or just play with others
- “Looking for Players” Signs: At Owlbear’s Rest, some tables display signs showing they’re open to more players. Signs even note whether someone at the table is ready and willing to teach a game! Don’t see one on any tables yet? Grab a sign and start your own party.

Can I bring my own games?
Of course! While we have a big library, you’re always welcome to bring your own favorites. We know that sometimes all you need is a bigger table and someone to hand you food.

It’s a custom-built tool to help you find the perfect game. We’re still adding games to the library database and are constantly improving it. Your feedback is welcome!
How do you measure game complexity in the database?
In our database, we evaluate game complexity using several factors to give players a clear idea of what to expect. Here’s what we consider:
- Choice Density: How many options are available when making a decision? More options usually mean higher complexity.
- Strategic Depth: Does the game reward long-term planning, or are future outcomes unpredictable?
- Teaching Load: How many rules are there, and how long does it take to explain them? Complexity increases with rule volume and difficulty.
- Learning Curve: How many plays does it take before a player can make confident, informed decisions?
- System Interconnectivity: Do choices interact with multiple overlapping systems? The more tightly woven the mechanics, the more complex the game.
- Forgiveness: Can a player make poor choices and still technically do okay? Games that punish missteps tend to feel more complex.
Do you have D&D and other tabletop RPGs?
Yes! We have D&D reference books and our Game Guides run sessions. We’re also building a collection of small press RPGs, especially from New England creators.
